A little background on the rapid transit system and arguments for rail

Personal (but shared in terms of being publicly accessible to anyone)rapid transit to take over from the car on site.

My idea however is personal automated (with user defined destination) rapid transit which will allow unstopped travel, stations will have through lines for express, and pods will be able to join up on major lines, reducing aerodynamic inefficiency and power sharing to improve energy consumption. Line intersections would occur through the automated slowdown/speedup of individual carriages rather than waiting at stop signals.

Its also interesting to note an increase in interest in recent years in regard to dual use rail/road vehicles

Arguments for rail

Shown are the widths of rights-of-way required to move 15,000 people in an hour. The street needs 119 metres (390 feet) while the rail rapid transit needs only 8 metres. (26 feet). Remarkably, the street is at 100% capacity and the rail line is only at 65%. Perhaps our infrastructure investments should not be in highways....From Vuchic's Transportation for Livable Cities
